Professional Volunteers

Professional volunteers act as volunteer attending clinicians at HAVEN, and are integral to the function and success of the clinic. Faculty preceptors guide teams of students in the evaluation and treatment of patients, giving them an opportunity to mentor students across the disciplines of medicine.

In order to become a medical preceptor at the HAVEN Free Clinic, we ask that you complete a credentialing and privileging process, and provide a recommendation from a current Yale faculty member. If necessary, we will work with you to find a Yale faculty member that can provide a recommendation on your behalf. Please email haven.free.clinic@yale.edu for more information.

Volunteer FAQs

  • HAVEN is open Saturdays from 9am-12pm. Medical preceptors should arrive by 8:30am for a pre-clinic meeting, and usually leave clinic between 1:30-2pm after the post-clinic meeting.

  • The application process is very straightforward: a brief application, submission of certain documents (CT License, etc.), an interview with our Medical Director and a shadowing session at the Clinic. The Faculty Recruitment Chair will walk you through every step of the way and make the process as simple and hassle-free as possible!

  • We ask our preceptors to volunteer a minimum of 1 Saturday a semester, although many of our preceptors volunteer much more frequently than the minimum!

  • HAVEN is staffed by faculty from the School of Medicine, School of Nursing and the PA School. These preceptors share a passion for improving healthcare access and for the hands-on experience of teaching young clinicians-in-training.

  • We have preceptors who are trained in various areas of internal medicine; however, since we are a clinic that provides predominantly primary care to adults, we do not currently have pediatricians working in the clinic (although that is potentially in the works!). We also have several specialists in fields such as surgery and neurology that perform in- and out-patient referrals work for the clinic.
